At the Frankfurt Book Fair, the weather can be as variable as the mood among attendees. For 2019, that means mostly sunny days.

Andrew Albanese“How was your Frankfurt Book Fair? Well, Penguin Random House’s was very, very good,” Andrew AlbanesePublishers Weekly senior writer, tells CCC’s Chris Kenneally.

So good, in fact, that to close the fair’s opening day, PRH CEO Markus Dohle hosted a reception to celebrate not only the publisher’s recent success but also the industry’s resurgence.

According to Albanese, Dohle told staff in a 20-minute speech interrupted multiple times for toasts, that “Many of you know that I’ve always been quite upbeat and optimistic – I would say realistic – about the global publishing industry and especially about our future prospects… This is the best time for publishing since Gutenberg.”

Yet clouds managed to find their way, Albanese notes.

Earlier this week, he reported that the King County (WA) Library System has decided it will no longer purchase embargoed e-book titles from publisher Macmillan, which recently announced a controversial embargo on new release library e-books set to begin in just two weeks.

Every Friday, CCC’s “Beyond the Book” speaks with the editors and reporters of “Publishers Weekly” for an early look at the news that publishers, editors, authors, agents and librarians will be talking about when they return to work on Monday.
